"The song's signature line "It's not easy being green" is a phrase that has since appeared in many contexts in pop culture. It is often quoted as an expression of melancholy over one's lot in life. The song is associated with questions of identity and individuality, but also with themes such as self-love and celebration of diversity, especially in terms of race (or "color"), which was at the forefront of social debate within American culture at the time of the song's debut. With the growing usage of green as a reference to environmentalism, the phrase (or its counterstatement) is often used in that context as well."

From The Sesame Street Book and Record (c)1970
It's not that easy being green;
Having to spend each day the color of the leaves.
When I think it could be nicer being red, or yellow or gold...
or something much more colorful like that.
It's not easy being green.
Having to spend each day the color of the leaves.
When I think it could be nicer being red, or yellow or gold...
or something much more colorful like that.
It's not easy being green.
It seems you blend in with so many other ord'nary things.
And people tend to pass you over 'cause you're
not standing out like flashy sparkles in the water or stars in the sky.
But green's the color of Spring.
And people tend to pass you over 'cause you're
not standing out like flashy sparkles in the water or stars in the sky.
But green's the color of Spring.
And green can be cool and friendly-like.
And green can be big like an ocean,
or important like a mountain, or tall like a tree.
When green is all there is to be
And green can be big like an ocean,
or important like a mountain, or tall like a tree.
When green is all there is to be
It could make you wonder why, but why wonder why?
Wonder, I am green and it'll do fine, it's beautiful!
And I think it's what I want to be.
Wonder, I am green and it'll do fine, it's beautiful!
And I think it's what I want to be.

"(2011) Andrew Bird revised the Kermit the Frog classic “Being Green” as part of an upcoming Muppets tribute record called The Green Album (Weezer’s also on the record so the album name is completely original). Bird’s poignant version captures the struggles of a young muppet with skin color issues and asks the philosophical question of why we can’t all be of a different hue."
